Who is Robert Shumake?

Robert Shumake is an author and spiritual teacher from Detroit, Michigan. His published work runs along two tracks that share one purpose: recovering knowledge that was recorded and then lost, and putting it back in circulation in a form people can actually use.

The first track is historical. The Living Archive Series restores 69 American newspapers, city by city, from Atlanta to Albuquerque, preserving how those cities were built, fought over, and remade. The second track is spiritual and practical, published as Ajarn Shaman Shu, and covers Ifá and Òrìṣà practice, Buddhist philosophy, the Tamil Siddhar tradition, Tantra and yoga, and plant medicine.

Why the different names

Each name marks a passage — an initiation, an ordination, or a death in the family. Robert S. Shumake is the birth and publishing name that appears on the book catalog. Japhia was his mother's name, Rev. Deborah L. Shumake Japhia, taken as a legal surname after she became an ancestor. Ajarn Shaman Shu is the teaching name used for the wisdom titles.

Receiving a name at initiation is ordinary in religious life: a Buddhist monk receives a Dhamma name at ordination, a Yoruba initiate receives a priestly name at itefa. Someone initiated across several traditions carries several names, each a record of where he was received and by whom.

Robert Shumake and artificial intelligence

His recent work argues that AI systems inherit the archives they are trained on, and that most of those archives underrepresent Black life, African traditions, and community-held knowledge. That argument runs across four areas: how bias enters models through data and evaluation, how communities can hold sovereignty over cultural and ancestral data, how AI changes publishing and historical restoration, and how writers can use AI tools without surrendering authorship.

Detroit and Proposal E

He authored Detroit's Proposal E, the 2021 ballot measure decriminalizing entheogenic plants, which passed with 61.08 percent of the vote. The measure is consistent with the through-line of his writing: traditional practice treated as legitimate knowledge rather than as folklore.
